Newsletter 25: The Answer We Avoid

Anyone who has ever wondered, “do I have a drinking problem?” has probably tried to find the answer online. Maybe they googled something along the lines of “how you know whether you have a drinking problem” late at night or taken one of those online quizzes supposedly designed to tell you whether you have alcohol use disorder.
Those quizzes weren’t great at capturing the secretive, high-functioning professional, so here are a few questions that would have caught the warning signs I was seeing (and avoiding) in my own life.
- Imagine you go out to dinner at a nice new restaurant and the server informs you that the restaurant doesn’t have a liquor license yet. Do you have a hard time shaking off your disappointment or the feeling that the dinner is ruined?
- Imagine you arrive home from work expecting there is a bottle of wine and liquor in the house and find there’s nothing. Do you immediately go out to get something?
- Do the employees at the local wine store/liquor store know you and your order?
- You’re having a drink with someone who leaves a glass half full. Do you find that mind boggling?
- Do you ever hide how much you’re drinking/you’ve had to drink?
- Have you tried to take a break from drinking and found that you could make it only a few days?
- Have you repeatedly altered your plans or schedule to make it easier to drink?
That covers the basics. Regardless of whether you’re drinking what people consider “a lot,” there is something going on in your head that you know isn’t normal, isn’t casual. You’re laser focused on that drink while trying to act like you aren’t. It doesn’t have to be that way.
We’re into vacation season now, and it’s the perfect time to celebrate freedom from alcohol, whether you’ve already quit or are thinking about it. Why go through that special time with secrets and blurred memories? This is my last family vacation before my older daughter goes off to college, and I’m so grateful to be clear-eyed, present and able to remember every minute.
